They most likely used tools like WorldEdit to speed it up rather than hand-placing blocks.

Also multiple years on a personal project doesn't mean they labored on it every day like an occupation.

I've been working on an AssaultCube map for years but only in my free time when I feel like working on it :P (Still not finished)

Nevertheless impressive.
