CGtextures

Hi!

I noticed that in SVN version you use some textures from cgtextures.com website, but I'm afraid that their license doesn't allow to use cgtextures in open source projects?

Example - toca/decals from cgtextures.com

Toca is a AC dev.

Do you mean this part?

It is NOT permitted to:
Release the Textures or derivative products under Open Source Licences

We do not!

The code is Open Source, not our media content.

No, they prohibit any (even modified) non-commertial redistribution of their textures. I don't like cgtextures due to tricky licensing terms. In simple words they prohibit using textures in open source games but allow using in commertial games.

May I use these textures in my Open Source (Creative Commons, GPL, etc) project?
No. These textures may not be used in Open-Source projects. The licenses are not compatible. Almost all Open-Source licenses allow redistribution of the materials, and redistribution is not allowed for these textures.

Didn't look at toca's file, but saw this on the website:
http://cgtextures.com/ Wrote:CONDITIONS OF USE

Use of the Textures is only allowed under the following conditions:
[...]
- Use in 2D or 3D computer graphics, movies and printed media
- Incorporation in computer games, 3D models

Where does the confusion lie then?

Ronald_Reagan, just look at thier FAQ section (I mentioned above).

http://opengameart.org/ it the best site for open source content.

Now read that again RPG:

What licensing do we use for our media?

Actually, I did mail CGTextures once to clearify. Here's their response:

CGTextures Wrote:Hi Carlo,

If you are able to release your part (textured models) under a non-open source license then it would be no problem. This is indeed the way most people use the textures in open source projects (release the art part under a 'closed' license) because most stock photo/texture libraries don't allow open source usage.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Hello CGTextures!

I found your great site quite a while ago and have been using some textures for homepage design so far.

Besides making homepages on a private, non-commercial base I am also mapping and creating mapmodels
for an OpenSource game. Refering to your terms of license it is not supposed to use your works on such
projects due to colliding licenses.

At this game (http://assault.cubers.net) it is completely up to the mapper, which license he attaches to
his work (textures, mapmodels) even if it will be inlcuded into the official AssaultCube distribute. It's only
the engine itself which really has to stay OpenSource.

As you might guess I am now asking whether I would be allowed to use your works for that particular
game, if I will release any media containing textures from yours:

- under full copyright and
- of course, with credit and links to your site on the documentary.

I see the worries of yours and the need to protect your works, though hope I will get the opportunity to
use your great sources.

Carlo

What? Depends on your textures. If they were derived from CGtextures and you modified them, check the license. If you fully made them yourself, you can license them however you want.
