"Founder of megaupload charged with violating piracy laws".

It's a harbinger of the Internet's fate should SOPA pass!

next it will probabally be mediafire :( imageshack, file/image uploading/dl sites..
hope that the devs have an alternative other than sourceforge to dl ac,
but then again they'll probably just shut down the internet world wide..
it'll end up happening eventually for all we know..

I like how they're arresting people for violating it before it actually goes through.

So, If they shut down our sites.. its okay Because Anonymous shut down theirs! The FBI Website is down now, and soon the Department of Justice in the US will be too, soon to be followed by the Universal Music websites.

The charges are not totally ridiculous. Megaupload was(AFAIK) paying users according to the popularity of their content and [allegedly] not doing a damn thing about infringing content. If Megaupload can show they gave even a small shit about the content being uploaded(Which they will) they can probably fight this.
I don't think the outrage is stemming from the site going down but because it comes just after the web went dark in protest of the now infamous SOPA/PIPA bills. There's also some concern over whether charges can be pressed by US prosecutors against foreign citizens but I don't see that issue panning out in Megaupload's favor. It may not matter since the charges are going to have a hard time sticking.

afaik they could be tried for negligence, but the internet and laws pertaining to it in the US are fairly similar to laws in the wild west. shoot em first and then let god or whomever sort it out.

You should all read up a little on Kim Schmitz' track record. Tbh, I find these allegations totally plausible.

I think he was saying that if you really know what you're doing, you don't use megaupload, not that you don't pirate.
