Cant't connect to any servers but can at school

I can connect to servers at school but I cant at home it says waiting for server response and I allow my firewall(I use virgin media) I even waited 30Min to wait for a response. Also the single player mode is crap the bots are stupid and you cant do all of the game modes if you know a mod that improves the single player experience please tell me.

But you don't have trouble getting a new list from the masterserver? (F5 in the serverbrowser)
For playing your router/firewall should be fine, you only need to fiddle with it if you want to get a server onto the interwebs. Some ISPs seem to block curious ports though, they probably think this is a way to hurt P2P software; I'd suggest to shun such unserviceable "providers".

I had that problem too, to solve it I download from here http://assault.cubers.net/download.html the package for my GNU/Linux SO And then play it from the "assaultcube.sh" file.
I think that was a problem of the version installed before.
