IMO it only "slows down as it ages" because people don't know how to properly manage their startups and services (and avoid adware/malware) so as to not cause excessive resource usage. Also no one ever defrags. Seriously go run defrag right now.

I don't understand Macs sometimes. And I'm entirely serious. And I work in tech support. So get this: I minimize a window, right, and then when I got to Alt-Tab, the window doesn't appear like it would in EEEEEEEEVERY other OS EVER. I have to go to the dock to get it back up again. Way to defeat the purpose of keyboard shortcuts, Apple. And also a bunch of little things like how Alt-D doesn't go to the address bar.

:P I find that useful so I dont accidentally switch screens, open up a window and mess up my flow.
I guess tech support doesn't help improve work-flow.
