I suggest making the paintballs have a two-tone shell with a rotating animation, kind of like that old, dead HL1 paintball mod (the one even before Digital Paintball).
That way they look like spheres instead of colored circles with no shading or depth.

At the moment, any home-hosted server can run more than 3v3 in paintball-mode without intense lag. :s
