The problem is that on the surface all of the new legislation seems perfectly logical. The lobbyists for all of these big name software developers and Hollywood studios tell the clueless politicians, "People are stealing what we have worked hard to produce. Pass this little bill we've written up and people won't be allowed to steal our products." To the internet-uneducated politicians who know little about modern information sharing systems, this sounds completely logical. As a community we cannot condone piracy. What we do condone and promote is the free facilitation/spread of information over the internet without encroachment from solely monetary driven special interests. The fact that our politicians have no clue that these legislations provide means by which large institutions can effectively squash start-ups and effectively circumvent anti-trust laws is ridiculous. The fact that our governments could legally censor entire parts of the internet is appalling.

My mantra for the U.S. is, and has always been
"Freedom isn't free."
That is all

I dunno why all you guys complain so much...
The shutdown of MegaUpload was a good thing. SOPA had just been destroyed after an excellent way of activism, and then the feds immediately shut down MegaUpload, showing that THEY DON'T NEED SOPA IN ORDER TO FIGHT PIRACY.
Lets face it, MegaUpload was not on the level. They were helping out people who were pirating. Sites like YouTube are never gonna be shut down, because they take piracy seriously, and take steps to fight it. As long as the US government continues to take down sites that are not legit, AC is going to be fine. You are still going to be able to surf the web. And people who are stealing what they have no right to are going to have to work a little harder to do so.
As someone who probably is going to be a video game developer one day, and actually wants to get paid for the products I create, I like where the web is headed.

If they start fucking with the sites I get my anime from, shit's going to go down. Luckily, most of the American entertainment industry doesn't really care about Japanese anime and a lot of what I watch isn't even licensed in the US, so I doubt that they will get around to it any time soon, but yeah.

The problem with that is that there was so much more to megaupload than just piracy, it was a site that allowed people to share their files, and quite a lot of it was legal. Shutting it down for the sake of helping to fight piracy would be like kicking people living in impoverished inner city areas out of their homes and closing off those areas to the public for the sake of helping fight drug abuse because there happens to be a large amount of drug dealing there. The point isn't that we think piracy is good, the point is that drastic actions like shutting down something like megaupload is a huge overreaction. Anyone who actually believes that these actions are justified and were the correct thing to do really doesn't deserve to have a voice as they have shown that they are willing to throw away the greatest modern technological development for the sake of jewing some more pocket money out of the people.

True enough. But people should know better than to just have a single copy of a file. Most of the legal files on MegaUpload should have also existed on a hard drive somewhere, and could easily have been uploaded to another site.

I don't agree with this analogy at all. Shutting down MegaUpload was an inconvenience for people, not something that should drastically affect their lives. And besides, shutting down the site was more like busting a single house for drugs than closing off an entire neighborhood. If the US government had suddenly decided to block all traffic from a particular country, then that would be like cordoning off a whole neighborhood.

If you share your car with friends, are you a pirate ? if we would share cars in big cities, we could save sources and help nature. (as example in one city in Europe it is bicycles) I don't like traffic jams caused by cars filled by one person. The profit needs such wasting distribution of sources for transportation. Sharing sources is common in nature and it isn't about communism, socialism or whatever.
The Internet is about such sharing, the information without sharing would be distributed as cars in cities, rich with more informations and new property of information: "ownership".
I think the model should be: you can buy information with some extra services but information itself should be free. Something extra should be prized, the casual should be free.
The market could handle it.
I think it is crazy the ownership of information can earn you money, because in the origin it isn't your information but is merged from others and declared as yours. The copyright laws should be changed.

The problem that people have with filesharing isn't that it allows sharing information, but rather that it allows distributing things like movies in such a way that the owners get nothing. Because of the ideas forced on them by Westernized education when it comes to capitalism and economics, they tend to forget about the actual purpose of sites like this on the internet: allowing a free way for people to share their knowledge and information with each other, which in opinion is the most important aspect of the Internet in general. Of course, I'm just the kind of person who finds beauty in simple things like 4chan, irc, and most free filesharing sites because it is there that people are free to express themselves in a way where their ideas are unfiltered by society's morals of right and wrong.
Changing copyright laws won't happen any time in the near future as the ideals behind them are too ingrained in our society for anything to happen unless there is some large violent backlash from people like us that is able to change the minds of the public in general. Of course, if most people on the internet are like me, this won't happen any time soon as at least I am way too lazy and too uncomfortable being in public to riot and fight for my beliefs.

don't stream anime on unofficial sites or use direct downloads. it's not worth it. there are better ways of getting shows like gits (if you ask, don't ask in the forums as they aren't all completely legal, but they won't get removed easily)
