Ever thought about how you could tidy up your links, make them shorter or make your files look neater?
Here I have made a website for the AssaultCube community.
http://acdes.net/
I would block IE6 and earlier, but this way you can see how pathetic that browser is compared to others.
This website will allow you to shorten your AssaultCube links.
You could turn -> http://files.des-clan.net/demonstration/...es.net.txt
into -> http://acdes.net/15FTJe
So please leave your comments here on what you think.
Please do not flame.

Hmm... I'm wondering whether this could be abused in any way, as you can't see the 'real' destination of that link anymore? You know, something like... http://forum.acdes.net/topic15FTJK. :P

Yes it could if you do it like that but if you have the tools and you know how to request information from the website it could be requested through this link as it is only a 302 redirect.
Also I do have the ability to delete links if they are miss used.

Of course it could be abused, like any of the other few bazillion URL shorteners out there.

Yes I am still afraid of that.
But if you find a link that is miss leading you can always speak to me and I can have a look at it.

Is this running off the des website or an entirely different server?

Sorry, I wasn't intending to discredit your work, Freddo!
It's only I'm about getting paranoid with all the weird fishing attempts going on on the web. :)

Well, to be honest, how many URLs are that long besides screenshots and pastebin ones?
I mean, it wouldn't be fully used in AC :/ (don't misunderstand me, it's a nice job though!)

It is located on the same host.

I know the feeling and that is why I like the ability to delete these entries.

This wasn't the first reason why I created this.
I wanted a function that was going to shorten my URL's for my server like my demos URL and also links on our DES website.
But this got me thinking what else I could use it for.
So I came up with this.

Looks like it could be useful, but I think people will prefer using .tk.

The first cms systems had this short path name but the current direction is to have structured path for SEO and googling in fullltext.
Pagerank of des domain can be influenced very rapidly by abusing websites.

How would you suggest so that it doesn't affect SEO, this is where my knowledge kinda of ends.
I never understood how page ranking worked.

Nobody understand. But such collecting links is danger. Because you do redirecting calling URL and final url doesn't match the calling. And final sites are outside your domain.

Can you please explain what you mean exactly? because I am not following what you are saying.

Bot is comparing final URL address and URL address which it calls.(<a href="calling url" >) If they are various, your pagerank will decrease. I think bot will not penalty source site and not final site but site which does redirecting. And it is des.net. Next, the calling url contains des.net but final site hasn't this part.

My understanding of a 302 redirect was it provided the referral site. Please correct if I an wrong.

Nice little service :) while it does have the benefit of shorter URLs, I think j.mp/2V6CFi might be a bit shorter than acdes.net/15FTJU ; The show-me-the-long-URL extentions are more likely to know about the former, too.

Yeah, right. And how exactly would it be harder to blacklist the spammers' URL shorteners, in addition to their sites themselves? I don't really get it.

they often use existing services but for sure they register first correct sites and then they use them for spam. It isn't victory if someone ban your shortener because of spammer.
