What client are you trying to use? How does Java even come in here?

superb. another thread explaining nothing. mykegregory - why didn't you just mention what the exact problem and solution was .. it might be considered helpful by somebody who runs into the same problem later ... *sigh*
My guess here is that it has something to do with a Java-Applet used to connect to IRC, or it's a Java-based program running from the desktop itself.
Sun Java should be preferred - other variants might be better in some things, but often don't provide 100% compatibility - so go with the original creators of Java, if in doubt.

Get firefox :)
Download a Add-on called Chatzilla.
Download Chatzilla: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16/
Make sure you restart firefox.
The re-open it and go to "Tools" search until you see "Chatzilla"
Click Chatzilla.
Then type
irc://irc.gamesurge.net/one-chat in the chat bar.
Then click on it and you will be in |oNe|'s IRC :)

i was unaware that i needed a client for the use of the IRC chat. i presumed that i just needed to download flash and it would work.
i am now using mIRC, and i use it often. thanks guy, and again, sorry.
