Assault Cube Sound Engineering
#1
Hi all,

I've been chipping away at new sounds for Assault Cube and a potential Assault Cube game soundtrack and I thought I'd share what I've got so far, if you've got any feedback please let me know, I can always remix and remaster these samples to improve them. They're also all released completely under an open licence, I only ask that you attribute me to your work if you decide to use it.

KnifeDraw 001

This is the combination of a large hunting knife being pulled from a leather sheath, the same knife scraping across a hard piece of leather and also a sharpening stone.

https://soundcloud.com/jakeewings/knifed...ube-sounds

Gunshot 001

This is a combination of a snap-lock bag popping, a hammer hitting a chopping board, hitting a chopping board against my chest and the clasp sliding up a pair of tongs

https://soundcloud.com/jakeewings/gunsho...ube-sounds

Reload 001

This was actually nothing more than some rehearsed fiddling with a pair of kitchen tongs, very simple to make.

Cheers,
Jake Ewings

imo the only problem i have is that they sound too clean for ac guns

if tweaked the draw would be cool, and the gunshot would make a cool COMBAT PISTOL GUN SHOT (if not i will settle for carbine)

I'm generally ok with the default sounds of AC...all except for the pistol fire. Gunshot 001 could be a good replacement, one that doesn't sound like it belongs in a western.

The gunshot is for the pistol, should have specified, what do you think would be better for the draw?

I totally agree with you, a lot of the AC sounds are fine as is, lets just say that they may not all hypothetically be legally licensed and might hypothetically need replacing haha

Yeah, I started working on other sounds I could easily replace first, I'll be working on the CTF sounds this week they're just a little more involved as far as mixing goes. Also I did see the warning that my replies would be sent to a max of 5 people when I hit reply all and there's about 20 people in the reply list, I'm thinking maybe all of you guys aren't getting the responses I'm sending.

It's a 470AHZ, completely unfinished natural wood. Ibanez stopped running that series this year, they've got a similar model with a fixed bridge and a nice walnut stain on it though. If you're interested in them though I'd recommend pulling out the stock pickups and putting in some SD distortions, the infinity's get good gain but they're really noisy.

i imagined it for the pistol first, but i like the current corny sound

the draw is too metallic: it sounds like a blade being dragged on another. maybe add that cliché "sching" or a leathery pull

my 2/100

Ahha, apparently all of us are special enough to not need that requirement. I was not aware of other replies. Maybe if the fellas getting the replies could post in the related thread on Asgard it would be lovely.

I think you're right there on the metallic sound, I'll try remixing it with a more leathery sound.

I think you're wrong about the handgun sound though hahaha I remember the first time I ever played assault cube and I heard that sound and just cringed haha

RE that CTF sound after 15 seconds, I tried to see what happens as is to get an idea of the kind of sound that would work best so I opened up a CTF in offline mode but holding on to the flag for 15 seconds doesn't seem to trigger any score/points, is this something that's coming in the future?

Er, sorry. The mode you want would be KTF (keep the flag)

I'm curious, how difficult is it to record a real gun-shot?

not that i dont like your work, but i think the gunshot sound is slightly too articulate for a realistic sound. maybe a hint of reverb or some other sound mixed in would give it a more live feeling. right now it sounds like there is a silencer on it that doesnt work completely.

it must have been fun to hit your chest with a cutting board.

Lol so true.
Not sure what sound a knife swinging in the air makes either :/

I'm sure you've recorded things before Waffles. Imagine mic'ing that from any sort of reasonable distance, and getting good sound.

I'm reworking the gunshot as we speak, but FYI recording an actual gunshot would be ridiculously hard, I'd need to take my recording setup to a gun range for starters (it's a desktop computer haha) and on top of that recording anything over like 100dba is extremely difficult, the huge spike in volume at the start of the gunshot means you'd need to have the mic gain extremely low so it didn't clip and limit, then because the gain was so low it wouldn't pick up anything after the first couple of milliseconds of pop. Recording actual guns would sound worse in the long run, that's the beautiful irony I'm starting to figure out about sound engineering hahaha

edit: I mean, I'm sure it's possible to pick up a decent sample, at an indoor gun range that you've covered in soundproofing and recording with an array of different super-high end microphones set to different gain levels, but unless I fall into a pile of money in the next few days it's not going to happen haha

Here's the updated gunshot sound, lots more bass, lots more reverb, sounds a lot tougher, let me know what you think:

Don't know if handguns are supposed to sound that low (referring to the bass) or if they have a higher pitch but I personally like it. I just feel like the pitch should be a tad higher.

Hi All,

As promised here's the revised pistol shot (usp.ogg), knife swing (knife.ogg) and pistol reload (pistol_reload.ogg), you can chuck them straight into \packages\audio\sounds\weapon if you want to give them a go in game, let me know what you think.

Literally just household items, the details of the gunshot source sounds are in the first post of this forum, reload_002 was sliding a big heavy knife over a pair of tongs and fucking around with the little groove that holds the clasp as well as me just sliding/fiddling with the clasp on the tongs with my hands.

would you make a grenade explosion sound?

Oh, well it's all recorded on a Shure SM57, I do all the mixing in a DAW called Reaper and I just use a basic set of studio style plugins (compressor, equalizer, reverb etc)

The sound for a grenade has me stumped to be perfectly honest, I'm going to try and find a big sheet of colorbond fence steel I can hit with a hammer for a bass sound, I think that's a good start, I just need to find a piece of it (shit's not cheap to buy) and figure out how on earth I'm going to suspend it in the studio with wire or something to hold it up so I can manage the recording and hitting. I really need more hands hahaha

Solutions:
1) Girlfriend.
2) Buy your friend a beer (or bagel, his choice).
3) Convince your friend it will be super fun thing to do.
4) Find that one undergrad that is looking for attention and recognition and have him help you.

Solutions:
Quote:1) Girlfriend.
Fail : Unless you wanna hear C*mshot instead of Headshot in AC.
Quote:2) Buy your friend a beer (or bagel, his choice).
Fail : One cautious is always better than two drunks.
Quote:3) Convince your friend it will be super fun thing to do.
Fail : Seriously don't do this if you wanna stay being friends.
Quote:4) Find that one undergrad that is looking for attention and recognition and have him help you.
Fail : Probably that's the way you convinced Jake?

My solution : Turn off that porno and get that your hand back to the job...a useful job!

P.S :@Jake Thx for the efforts and keep up the nice job. GL

I'd defend myself, but it really is how this whole thing started hahaha

I got a big bowie knife, probably 10 or so inches, and swung it around as fast as I could and the swishing sound it makes is so quiet it's more or less inaudible. The swing sound I made is a couple of coat-hangers being swung through the air and tuned down a little with a little bit of rustling clothes behind it. Modern shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield generally use a sound that's based around clothes rustling quickly as they rush for the knife but it really doesn't fit in with the assault cube style or animations.

Yeah, I know, just trying not to explicitly say the default sound is stupid :P
It's too bad if we gave it a realistic sound modders would keep the original sound to have the advantage.

Also not sure how practical it is but I wondered if you could buy some Black Catz and record them with some tweaks for gunshots :/ Don't blow up your mic lol
