Best compression for videos
#1
Friends,

I have 120gb Hardisk space in my pc. Supported by windows.
Around 70Gb of this is taken by various old and classical hollywood movies which i want to preserve and store in my compilation by various downloads i did in past.
I want to know which is the best compression for videos so that i can get good compressed output.. taking less of my space in the pc and giving me good quality if not H.D.. basically most videos are .avi and .mp4 and i want them to cover around 250mbs each for a 700mb movie.

and i also want to know about a compression software decoder-encoder whatever it is called... and if my poor pc can play such programs or not..

Windows 7, 1.80ghz Dual core E2160 with 2Gb ram.
i have vlc player.

You would have to geta video converter afaik and set every thing really low quality. Getting a movie to be 250mbs in size will give you high quality... on an iPhone... maybe.

It all comes down to personal preferences, I myself use the following on Handbrake (btw, for a client, I would recommend handbrake as it's very simplistic and easy to figure out. Handbrake is a DVD ripper, however you can select the source as a movie file, with no probs - best of all, you can queue up all the jobs you want it to do, so you can just leave your PC on while it sits there coverting all the movies, without further intervention).

There are 3 main parts to a video.

* Container format
* Video format
* Audio format

For container format, handbrake allows ".mp4" or ".mkv" (they dropped AVI support some time ago). The AVI file format is only really any good if you're planning to edit the movie file, as you're not, you're probably best going with ".mp4" or ".mkv". As to choosing between these, it more comes down to personal preference. ".mp4" is very mainstream, so should play pretty much everywhere. ".mkv" is a newer file format, which is open source in it's implementation and allows support for a variety of different video/audio/etc formats within it, but due to it's new age, isn't as supported as .mp4 (example: a
PS3 doesn't support it).

Video format: Down to personal preference again, I choose h264 as it's the most common format for HD videos. Handbrake supports h264 or mpeg-4 format. "h264" is an open standard (although, apparently encumbered by patent issues, so not as good as .ogg in that respect).

Audio format: Down to personal preference again. I chose AAC for best compression.

well i kiwiac isnthere any thing simple for me:(
@Jamz
using your software.. but it takes a long time.. i convert from avi to ipod version..

FYI: Conversion will take a long time, no matter which software you use.

Handbrake is very simple. Download it and try it. If you're looking for iPod videos, it has a setting specifically for that.

Oh, right... It takes advantage of multi-threading/multi-cores. The software you were previously using might not have done that. Also, it could be converting to a different format possibly?

yes... some .mkv so i have gom player already so no problems with encoding..

file size is very small...

one file was around 700mbs and it squeezed to 275~mbs.. so its like almost half..
and really i dont mind the quality.. its watchable.. just like youtube
very very good software thanks..

first i was little confused... now i see that i can put atleast 3 videos on conversion and some other at queue.

and the best thing is that quality is not very very poor.. its like some kind of internal softning done to make the compression look better and not rough:)

thanks a lot randumkiwi:)
