Overall 'smoothness' in Linux
#1
So i've found from playing AC 1.0/1.1 in both windows and linux that i'm getting a much 'cleaner' and clearer game in windows. I've tired fiddling around with vsync and different graphics options but it seems I simply can't get the same clear picture that I do when I boot into windows.

I have the latest ati drivers(ati radeon 4670), is there settings I could change in ati catalyst that might help? The actual issue is hard to explain, it just seems like the screen is having a hard time rendering/keeping up, but I don't see any visible tearing between frames.

I might screen record on both win/linux if this doesn't make sense.

P.s is there a way to get gamma to work on linux?

Thanks in advance, Castiel

I really don't get what you mean by "cleaner". Is the resolution higher, or do you get a higher framerate, or do the textures look better, or what?

There is something really wrong with your linux graphics module.
What distro do you use?

Running Ubuntu 10.10, everything is up to date as far as I can tell, gamma just doesn't do anything.

And I seem to get a decent framerate, 200-400fps, depends what I limit it to but movement still seems not as crisp, I'll record gameplay from both and show the difference when I get round to it.

Mouse issues? Search around the ubuntu forums maybe.

Is compiz installed by default on 10.10? if so try

metacity --replace

in the terminal to turn off compiz.

compiz --replace

turns it back on again.

I used to have to do this with Hardy heron to get AC to run properly, maybe meerkat is the same.

The mouse could be responsible for this. Linux mouse input isn't really great.

Make sure you do

xset m 0 0

when running linux (turns all stupid thresholds and acceleration off).

Thanks guys :) I think it was compiz that was screwing me over.

Although the gamma option still does nothing, I can use the xgamma command if this isn't fixable, but it just seems a bit strange.

This is the output from the terminal when the game starts(I dunno if it'll help at all):

yah... 200fps is "decent" compared to my 60fps. :-P
