Do you have font.cfg in your config folder?

Try
bin_unix/linux_client -q/home/h/.assaultcube_v1.1 -r
instead. If that one works, something within assaultcube.sh doesn't work as it should.

Do you have only an AssaultCube folder with assaultcube.sh in it?

Did you download from http://assault.cubers.net or some other provider?

You might have downloaded the source code instead of the actual game package.
Make sure you download AssaultCube_v1.1.0.3.tar.bz2 instead of AssaultCube_v1.1.0.3.source.tar.bz2

Well, you simply don't have a config directory. Try re-extracting the archive (if you still have it). If that still leaves you without that directory, try re-donwloading.
