Server for windows and linux machines

Does anyone know how to create a server so that players who use linux and windows can play? We want to use a LAN. Some players have version 1.1 and others have version 1.0.

Anyone on any OS can connect to any server on any OS, but the versions do have to match (1.0 clients can't connect to 1.1 servers and vice versa).
