I would not suggest "doing" weapons. Your GF might get a little jealous.

Skinning, any image editor (I suggest PhotoShop or Gimp. Habluka will probably soon spam us about gimp)
Modeling, Blender is what a fair amount of people use. Its free. Its also more complicated than what you probably want to deal with. (I have a feeling you dont have much experience in this area.)
Also, if you just look around on the forums, you will find several tutorials. One about skinning, one about modeling. I dont know, I only browse this stuff.
