HA. You would not believe the number of people that own guns unnecessarily here in the US. Last I heard there were 83 guns for every 100 people, though many people that own a gun own multiple.
An elderly couple just down the street from my house owns a rifle for protection(A ridiculous excuse if you ask me. I hate to say it but we live in a privileged homogeneous white neighborhood that happens to be right next to the local police station; nobody here needs protection). Each day they bring the gun downstairs, and each night they take it back upstairs.
Apparently the gun was not only carried down and up each day and night but the gun was loaded and the safety was off. So one day the husband is moving the rifle and it obviously goes off. Shot his wife in the shoulder. AFAIK she's fine.
When I first heard the story I joked that maybe she should have her own gun for protection from him and his gun can protect him from her.
