I change the extension of the most recent save from .BAK into .cgz and even put the old .cgz map in the recycle bin.

Something's wrong there already - you should actually get an error message ("file already exists").

but then it says: could not read file packages/maps/"mapname"

Just to be sure: I hope it doesn't actually and exactly say that, right?
