My bass is a Squier Classic Vibe 50'ies, ran through a Yorkville 200 watt combo.
When I played guitar, I had a MIA Tele made in 1999 through an old Fender Top - can't remember the name now, but it was awesome, from the 70ies. I wish I still had those.
In that budget range you speak of, you should be able to get a real fine instrument.
I have always loved telecasters for their simplicity first, tone second, although my tele had an unusually warm tone. It was awesome, really. "Funky Jam Tool" sounds like tele style though :)
Never was a fan of Gibson guitars, maybe because I am more of a rythm player when it comes to guitar. 4 knobs is already too much for me :P
If I could have my own tele built today, it would probably be just the bridge pickup and a volume pot :P
