Here in the States, teachers get paid next to nothing, requiring them to have incredible alternative motivation to teach (i.e., the good of society, a chip on the shoulder, grammar nazism, control issues, etc).

Unfortunately, I think that no matter what their original motivations were, it usually comes down to being able to do nothing else. That seems to result in some serious control issues and insecurity in their authority. :/
