Overall 'smoothness' in Linux

Is compiz installed by default on 10.10? if so try

[SELECT ALL] Code:

metacity --replace

in the terminal to turn off compiz.

[SELECT ALL] Code:

compiz --replace

turns it back on again.

I used to have to do this with Hardy heron to get AC to run properly, maybe meerkat is the same.
