Also this is no more an idiosyncrasy than a single "r" or a double "rr" in Spanish. It's not odd or peculiar, it's simply one letter that changes the definition of the word.
If I said in Spanish "Me gusta comer perras" when I mean "Me gusta comer peras" would that not be funny to you if you know the difference?
