Microsoft generic drivers only offer enough processing power to provide you with the ability to access your graphical environment to install your actual gpu manufacturer's drivers.
Your "generic graphic card" is likely integrated Intel, and DOES need it's proprietary drivers.
Try downloading the Intel Driver Update Utility.
