Looks a bit like the "boker" knife i made long time ago
If you twist it more towards you then you can have more details of blade etc..

Yes, blender does have a standart option for .3ds afaik (at least the new version)
and iirc .max too

I think what you're seeing the "Missing content" texture. The skin wasn't installed properly.
