I was just wondering how I could use VPN services to host an AC server. ATM, I can host one off of my home computer but I want to have it up 24/7 and for free. Is this possible with a VPN service?
How do you use a VPN service to make a server?

You don't. A VPN is a Virtual Private Network that you use for things such as proxying your own network traffic through, or providing a secure connection to a private network over the Internet. There's no way this can keep a server online while your home computer isn't up.
You may be thinking of a VPS (Virtual Private Server), which is basically a virtual machine on a server that acts as your virtual dedicated server in that you have root access but you aren't the only one on the overall hardware. It's not always exactly a VM, but that's just the general idea of it. Since AC servers have very low local resource overhead, a VPS is a common choice for hosting them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_server It's not going to happen for free, I'm afraid.

Thank you Jg99, I did mean VPS and not VPN, LOL.
But for DNS servers like if I wanted to change my external IP address to a type of URL. Like instead of typing /connect 173.174.94.234 2222 could I instead type something like /connect acwarrior.org 2222? I have heard of various services like no-ip.org and x10hosting but I am not sure if these will work.

Yes, free dynamic DNS services like that will work. I recommend http://freedns.afraid.org — best domains to choose from there.
You can do the same, more or less, whether you use that or buy your own domain.

Thanks Jack. But I just decided to use no-ip.org because of its easy to use interface and it made the entire proccess easy to complete. Once again thanks to Jg99 too.

It's best to host a server using a LAN connection. Wireless hosting isn't the best. I suppose it's possible as long as you're connected to the internet somehow, but it's not recommended.

People should just buy an Ethernet cable to host a low ping server and connect it directly from your computer to the router. If your card is fast enough you can have up to 150mbps! Which is more than enough to host an AC server maybe even 2 of them lag-free! :)

Honestly, I don't see the point of hosting a server when there are already so many out there.

Some people may feel powerful/important/respected and thus, the consciousness of having a purpose in life. Do not tell them this is only a video game and not real life. Some others want to contribute to this game (eg TyD, BoB and sJ ladders) and you should thanks them because if all player were thinking like you, the amount of running servers would be 0 ...

So as to be clear,
if "some people" host a server it's to "feel powerful/important/respected and thus, the consciousness of having a purpose in life." but if "TyD, BoB and sJ ladders (I.E. Clans) host a server its because they "want to contribute to this game" p.s. edward, Im touching this/ |
